Sam Smith: 'It's the scandalous celebrities that run this business'

Singer Sam Smith, who recently underwent surgery following a vocal cord haemorrhage, has revealed that he will never get involved with anything scandalous because he only wants to be in the headlines for his songs.

During an interview with the German edition of Glamour magazine, the sensation explained that he will never seek attention outside of his music career because he doesn't like it when people in the industry act out for more press coverage:

"Since I was eight, I've dreamed of being successful with my music. When I finished the album, I sensed it was something really special. But that doesn't automatically mean you'll be successful these days. In the music business, there's often this feeling you should also get attention by looking edgy, showing lots of skin and entertaining scandals. But I can't and won't offer that. I want my music to be enough to make people listen. Musicians like me are sadly in the minority, it's the scandalous celebrities that run this business."

The 'Stay With Me' hitmaker, meanwhile, bagged the Top Male Artist prize at the recently Billboard Music Awards ceremony and celebrated the win with a pre-recorded post-surgery speech that saw the silent singer hold up cards with messages on them.
