Sam Smith hopes Ellie Goulding will do the next James Bond theme

Sam Smith says Ellie Goulding should record the next theme tune for the James Bond movie series.

The singer announced earlier this month that he has created the track 'Writing's On The Wall' for the upcoming Bond film Spectre.

The identity of the theme's singer, however, was kept secret for months.

Smith dropped Ellie Goulding in it during a previous radio interview by saying he heard she had done the Spectre song.

Speaking to OK!, the 'Stay With Me' star apologised for saying her name and suggested she should record the next Bond tune.

Smith said: "I felt really bad and I have to apologise because I never said that Ellie was doing it.

"I just heard rumours so when I was asked, 'Who do you think should do it?' I was like, 'Well I heard Ellie Goulding was doing it'. I never meant to put her in it.

"She would 100 per cent be the best person for it, so hopefully next time she'll do it."

The Spectre theme song will be released on September 25, with the film following on October 26.
