Sam Smith's 'Stay With Me' wins Song of the Year BMI Award

Sam Smith is celebrating after bagging a BMI London award.

The singer won the Song of the Year prize at the event in the British capital on Monday (October 19).

He fought off the likes of Ed Sheeran, Coldplay and Tove Lo to win with his 2014 track 'Stay With Me'.

The prize recognises the most-played songs - written by European artists and songwriters - of the last year on TV and radio in the US.

John Newman won Pop awards for 'Love Me Again' and the Calvin Harris collaboration 'Blame'.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards received the BMI Million-Air Award for the Rolling Stones' '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction'.

They picked up the prize as a result of its nine million combined radio plays on American radio.

Songwriter Graham Gouldman, who has penned for the likes of the Yardbirds, was named the BMI Icon.
