Jim Keller is kicking off the New Year with a practice familiar to many - reflecting on the past. On his new song “Mistakes,” Keller road trips down memory lane from Georgia to Texas and charts the regrets that have come and gone along the way. “Mistakes” is the latest offering from Keller’s first album in seven years By No Means (out February 12), and he’s joined on the set by an illustrious group of collaborators including producer Mitchell Froom (Randy Newman, Crowded House), Los Lobos legend David Hidalgo on guitar and a rhythm section of Michael Urbano (Todd Rundgren, John Hiatt) and Bob Glaub (Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon).

Says Keller of “Mistakes”: “This track was such a joy to record. The groove is so deep and rich thanks to Bob Glaub’s hooky bass part and Michael Urbano’s groove that you can drive a truck on it. You can hear Mitchell’s keyboard parts in the background giving the track a kind of voodoo vibe. Hidalgo’s simple solo section is beautifully understated. Guilt, one of my favorite song topics. A never-ending flow of material coming from that river.”

By No Means marks the next chapter in one of music’s most unusual careers. In addition to his lauded solo work, Keller penned the smash hit “867-5309 / Jenny” as a member of Tommy Tutone in the 80s and has served as Philip Glass’ manager over many of the intervening years. His songs have earned high praise from Tom Waits, who noted they “make me feel like I have big plans, no worries and all my hair.” Keller also counts Nels Cline and Marc Ribot as supporters and collaborators, and they are among over two dozen musicians who’ve re-worked “Don’t Get Me Started,” another track from By No Means, over the past year.
