Simon Cowell says One Direction have to 'up their game' due to rise of 5 Seconds of Summer

Simon Cowell believes One Direction are under threat from the emergence of 5 Seconds of Summer.

Both acts are out on tour together at the moment, but the Australian group are enjoying a massive surge in fan numbers.

The pop-punks recently released their debut album and it reached No.1 in the States.

Syco boss Cowell is quoted by the Daily Star as saying that One Direction will need to keep an eye on their performance due to the rise of 5 Seconds of Summer.

He said: "It does mean 1D have to up their game a bit. We knew a lot of boybands would follow but the competition is tough at the moment."

The music mogul added that he thought One Direction's decision to pick 5 Seconds of Summer as their tour support was a bit odd.

He said: "I think it was a strange decision. A bit like the cuckoo in the nest."
