STREAM/PURCHASE: SPRAGGA BENZ - CHILIAGON

Directed/co-edited by Masood Khan, shot by Ali Farahani, and co-edited/graphics by Steve Chappell, the clip finds the charismatic Spragga questing for a throne, also metaphorically expressing the homeward yearning and disconnect of African culture in Jamaican and Rastafarian lore. Recently shot in London, where he also made time to take the roof off at cHIP sHOP Brixton for the album launch and film the video for Boy Better Know’s Frisco’s latest smash ‘Cool Nuh’ which he features on, the heightened visuals capture Spragga’s invigorated presence surrounding all things CHILIAGON. His pairing with UK hip hop legend Rodney P on the track results in a masterful showcase of two contrasting, yet complementary pioneers who paved the way for so many in their respective genres. Produced by Lil’ Rossco, ‘King On The Throne’ was co-written by Spragga, Rodney P, Paul Fowler and Ross Cornfield.

The critically acclaimed CHILIAGON has been universally embraced as another seminal work from one of the most influential artists of the Dancehall movement. The album’s genesis can be traced to a London visit by Spragga in 2017, initiated by Buttercuts label head Andrew Oury. Featuring Tanika, General Levy, Rodney P, Killa P and Harry Shotta and productions from Cadenza, Toddla T, JAMirko, Sukh Knight and Zed Bias, the inspiring icon collaborated with some of the top UK producers and artists schooled on Dancehall and Spragga’s lasting impact on the UK music scene. CHILIAGON blends roots, riddim, drum and bass, garage, grime and hip hop into a diverse canvas of infectious beats effortlessly propelled by the Kingston native’s dynamic flow. Previous singles including ‘Differ’ produced by Toddla T, and ‘If Yuh Ready’ featuring UK legend General Levy reflect the album’s multi-faceted vibe.

Adopting its name from a 1,000-sided polygon that symbolized contemplation and meditation to some of the world’s early philosophers, Spragga’s CHILIAGON deftly emblazons new threads into Dancehall’s all-encompassing cultural fabric. The humble but adventurous artist is still bringing entrancing wordplay and unparalleled collaborative skills to the UK music scene 25 years after his genre-defining breakthrough.
