The Great Escape announces 2022 conference strands

The Great Escape, the festival for new music, has today unveiled the core strands for its acclaimed conference which will run 11 - 14 May 2022 at the Jury’s Inn Waterfront hotel in Brighton. Across its 2022 conference programme, TGE will present a full day of talks, debates, case studies and insights around each of three key themes - education, data and video - with leaders and innovators from across the music, tech and creator sectors unpacking their experiences and discussing the latest trends affecting artists and their business partners.

In addition, the festival has announced that mental health charity and services provider Music Support has come on board as 2022’s charity partner while leading music school BIMM joins as the education partner. Finally, The Great Escape’s Lead Country Partner in 2022 will be Ireland, who will host a special showcase of local talent – including searing rapper Malaki and garage-noise group Sprints – at next year’s festival, organised by music export office Music From Ireland.

WEDNESDAY 11 MAY – MUSIC + EDUCATION

The Great Escape and CMU bring together music educators, music development organisations and the music industry to discuss the best ways to nurture, support and educate young musicians, early-career music-makers and future music talent - on and off stage. Tapping into the latest research work from CMU's Pathways Into Music Foundation, we'll look at how DIY phase artists are going about building a fanbase in 2022, and how educators can inform that process and sign-post the tools and resources now available. Plus what are the biggest challenges facing music educators today - and what support can the music industry offer?

THURSDAY 12 MAY – MUSIC + DATA

The Great Escape and CMU put the spotlight on all the ways data now drives success in the music business. The data that gets artists and songwriters paid. The data that will help #fixstreaming. The data that informs music discovery. The data that powers music marketing. The data that profiles fans and fanbases. The data that sits at the heart of ticketing. The data that is powering new direct-to-fan products and opportunities. Who creates this data? Who controls this data? And how can artists, songwriters, labels, publishers, agents, promoters, venues, artist managers and music marketeers ensure that all the data is accurate, accessible and driving that success?

The Great Escape and CMU explores the intersection between music and video. Where are TV producers, movie studios, gaming companies, brands, online creators and social influencers sourcing their music in 2022 - what are their options, what are their requirements and what do the deals look like? Plus what about all the video content the music industry now creates every single day? What content works? Where do you publish and push the videos? How do you influence the influencers? And how much of that content is about marketing - and when should video be a revenue generator for artists, songwriters and the wider music industry?

What the f– is the metaverse?

In addition to the conference strands, The Great Escape has announced two of its partners for next year’s festival. Coming on board as the charity partner, Music Support helps those who work in music and live events affected by mental ill-health and/or addiction. Services include safe hubs at live events, mental health first aid training, Addiction and Recovery Workshops as well as a helpline that provides callers with a confidential and non-judgmental listening ear from trained industry peers, all who have personal experience of the music and live events industry and the issues that music support cover.

Commenting on their partnership with the conference, Eric Mtungwazi, Chief Executive, Music Support, said, ‘The global pandemic has had a devastating impact on the music and live events industries from performers to the thousands who work alongside them, with many still unable to return to work. We are incredibly grateful to the Great Escape Festival for choosing Music Support as their partner charity for 2022, raising vital funds and awareness to help us to support our peers who work in music and live events affected by mental ill-health and/or addiction.’

Suzi Ireland, BIMM’s Artist Development and Festival Manager, added ‘BIMM Institute are very excited to announce that we are once again Lead Educational Partner for the Great Escape festival held in Brighton next May. We have all missed this vital event in the music industry calendar, and we can’t wait to showcase some of our best artists and provide students with invaluable work experience. BIMM students will once again help to run the festival by filling key production and marketing roles behind the scenes, and our artists will play various venues around the city as well as getting involved in TGE’s popular street performances.’

The Great Escape conference will be hosted at Jury’s Inn Waterfront hotel, overlooking Brighton’s iconic beach and pier, with rooms for next year’s festival and conference available now.
