The Vamps' James on bullying: 'Fans think people in bands are immune to that'

'Somebody To You' hitmakers The Vamps are currently on tour around the UK and member James McVey recently stopped for a chat with Glasgow's Evening Times about how his career has helped him to overcome confidence issues.

McVey confessed that he was a victim of bullying at school, so getting on stage to perform to thousands of people can be daunting but he has learned to see it as an activity that supports his self-worth rather than one that intimidates him:

"I think people, and certainly our fans, maybe think that people in bands are immune to all that. Everyone goes through things like that though, and if I can help out then I'd like to do that. Being in a band kind of forced me to improve my confidence, just by going onstage every night, so it's been good in that sense."

McVey, meanwhile, also told the newspaper that he and the other members are very mindful of how they treat fans and the press because they know what it's like to be sneered at and looked down on:

"I think it's important to stay grounded, and be polite to be those around you, because you don't always get that in the industry. You need to keep on chatting to fans on the interact and be interactive, that was so important for us. There were people really rude and dismissive to us, and we still get that every day. It's fine though, we'll just carry on doing what we're doing."
