Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton has shelled out $100,000 to buy a gold guitar owned by Prince.

"We got $100,000 for that, brother Lewis Hamilton, the race car driver," the ‘Purple Rain’ singer told talk show host George Lopez. “It's gonna be hard to part with. A lot of my stuff gets stolen."

The guitar was sold in an auction benefiting the Harlem Children’s Zone, a non-profit organisation that offers education assistance to underprivileged families.

Prince is currently performing a 21-night residency in Los Angeles, which has seen the enigmatic star play for over three hours a show.
