TV On The Radio’s Gerard Smith died yesterday, at the age of 34.

The bassist was diagnosed with lung cancer last month and had been receiving and responding well to treatment.

“We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer," the group said in a statement posted on their website. “Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th 2011. We will miss him terribly."

TV On The Radio’s latest album, ‘Nine Types of Light,’ was released on April 12.
