Warner Chappell Music, the global music publishing arm of Warner Music Group, has renewed its deal with David Tao, one of the most influential Mandopop artists and the pioneer of Chinese R&B.
Tao has won six Golden Melody Awards - the Taiwanese equivalents of The Grammys – including prizes for Best Male Chinese Singer and Best Album. He was the first debut artist to be nominated in five categories at the Golden Melody Awards, following his eponymous debut album in 1997. Tao is known for forging a distinctive sound blending Mandopop, R&B and rock influences.
He began his rise to stardom with his eponymous debut album which brought him numerous awards and earned him the title of Best Asian Singer Songwriter from Billboard. Six further brilliant studio albums followed, including Hello Goodbye most recently in 2013. He’s also toured extensively, performing across Asia as well as in the US and Canada.
In addition to his own successful career as a singer-songwriter, Tao has written and produced music for major Chinese stars such as A-Mei and Jolin Tsai and adopted a far-sighted approach to nurturing young music talent. He founded the New Song Education programme, which supports young musicians through mentoring, seminars and workshops. He was also a judge on the Chinese TV show Sing My Song to inspire the new generations of singer songwriters.
David Tao says: “Warner Chappell has always had my back. I’ve worked with the team for many years and I do enjoy the professional service. The team manages my songs well and I am happy to continue our relationship. Their efforts have meant my time has been freed up to pursue my belief in music, education and film production. Also, I’m really excited about the projects we have worked together, particularly the opportunities to work with writers and artists from different backgrounds and cultures.”
Monica Lee, President, Warner Chappell Asia Pacific, adds: “I’m delighted that David has put his trust in us as always. His evergreen songs have been very influential to the development of Asian music and he’s been absolutely integral to the success of the Mandopop scene. His own artist career has been stellar, he’s the go-to artist for the biggest stars, and he’s always seen the importance of giving something back by nurturing the next generation of talent. It is our pleasure to be a part of his musical journey and we will continue to strive for excellence together.”
Through this tough year, Tao has never stopped sending out his love through music. He will be performing in a charity concert in Taipei to raise fund for disabled children on 27th November. He is planning to release a new album, capturing his thoughts and passions for the world, in 2021.
