BLACK ART: IN THE ABSENCE OF LIGHT (Documentary)

Synopsis: This film is a vital and illuminating introduction to the work of some of the foremost African American visual artists working today, including Theaster Gates, Kerry James Marshall, Faith Ringgold, Amy Sherald and Carrie Mae Weems, the film is a testament to the indelible contributions of Black American artists in today’s contemporary art world.

LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER

Synopsis: The only weekly news-oriented comedy series to be presented on Sunday night, this series takes a satirical look at news, politics and current events. Taped in New York a few hours before it debuts, the Emmy®-winning show features Oliver’s topical commentary on the previous week’s events, as well as addressing broader issues.

BEARTOWN (Drama Series)

Synopsis: This five-episode drama series from Sweden, explores the hopes that bring a small community together, the secrets that tear it apart, the courage it takes for an individual to go against the group and the consequences of how we raise our children. With a small-town Swedish junior ice-hockey team having a shot at winning the national semi-finals, all the dreams of the locals now rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys. This heavy burden becomes the catalyst for a violent act that will leave a young girl traumatized and a town in turmoil. Accusations are made, and like ripples on a pond, they travel through Beartown, leaving no resident unaffected.

THE INVESTIGATION (Limited Drama Series)

Synopsis: From Oscar-nominated Tobias Lindholm, THE INVESTIGATION explores the complex real-life investigation surrounding the 2017 murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall, making international headlines around the world as one of the most notorious criminal cases in Danish media history. Based on the internationally followed “submarine case,” the series closely follows Jens Møller (Søren Malling), the Head of Homicide, and his team in the pursuit of the truth. With the hope of being able to provide the prosecutor (Pilou Asbæk) solid evidence in order to create a convincing case and give the relatives the certainty they deserve, the team enlists the use of methodical, unusual and technical work tactics. The series was made in close cooperation with the real-life Jens Møller and Kim Wall’s parents, Ingrid and Joachim Wall.

THE LADY AND THE DALE (Documentary Series)

Synopsis: This documentary series explores an audacious 1970s auto scam centered around a mysterious entrepreneur. The series tells the story of Elizabeth Carmichael, who rose to prominence when she released a fuel-efficient three-wheeled vehicle during the 1970s gas crisis. As she wins over major carmakers and investors, a web of mystery unfolds regarding the car’s technology and Carmichael’s surprising past.

Synopsis: Part meditative tutorial, part fireside chat, each episode of PAINTING WITH JOHN finds cult favorite musician, actor, director and painter, John Lurie. ensconced at his work table, where he hones his intricate watercolor techniques and shares his reflections on what he’s learned about life. Combining stunning images of Lurie’s paintings, original music, and irreverent point of view on tapping into your childlike artist side, his overall ambivalence toward fame, and more, the series reminds us to prioritize a little time every day for creativity and fun.

Synopsis: This eight-episode drama series produced by HBO Europe in Spain introduces viewers to a world where nothing is as it seems, and nobody can be trusted. Father Vergara (Eduard Fernández) is an exorcist, boxer and ex-convict who is exiled by the church to be the priest of a remote town in Spain. He wants to forget and be forgotten, but his enemies will soon find him. Strange things begin to happen, and an unlikely task force of Mayor Paco (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) and local vet Elena (Megan Montaner) seek the truth, while reality is distorted by a cursed coin at the heart of a global conspiracy.

COVID DIARIES NYC (Documentary)

Synopsis: This documentary chronicles the lives of five young filmmakers, ranging in age from 17 to 21, who turn their cameras on themselves to tell the stories of their families during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. The deeply personal film illuminates the plight of essential workers and their families during the early days of the COVID-19 crisis as they navigate the deadly virus and a country riven by social upheaval.

Synopsis: In the last years of Victoria’s reign, London is beset by the “Touched”: people - mostly women - who suddenly manifest abnormal abilities - some charming, some very disturbing. EXTERMINATE ALL THE BRUTES (Four-Part Documentary Series)

Synopsis: This four-part documentary series by acclaimed filmmaker Raoul Peck (“I Am Not Your Negro,” HBO’s “Sometimes in April”) pushes the boundaries of traditional documentary filmmaking, offering an expansive exploration of the exploitative and genocidal aspects of European colonialism, from America to Africa and its impact on society today.

SEEN & HEARD (Two-Part Documentary)

Synopsis: This two-part documentary explores the history of Black television as seen through the eyes of trailblazers who wrote, produced, created and starred in groundbreaking series of the past and present. The documentary will offer cultural commentary about representation in black storytelling and feature interviews with actors, showrunners, writers, celebrities and other notable influencers as well as verité-driven segments and inventive use of archival material.

THE GILDED AGE (Drama Series)

Synopsis: The American Gilded Age was a period of immense economic change, of huge fortunes made and lost, and the rise of disparity between old money and new. Against this backdrop of change, the story begins in 1882 - introducing young Marian Brook, the orphaned daughter of a Union general, who moves into the New York City home of her thoroughly old money aunts Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook. Accompanied by Peggy Scott, an accomplished African-American woman, Marian inadvertently becomes enmeshed in a social war between one of her aunts, a scion of the old money set, and her stupendously rich neighbors, a ruthless railroad tycoon and his ambitious wife, George and Bertha Russell. In this exciting new world that is on the brink of the modern age, will Marian follow the established rules of society, or forge her own path?

Synopsis: Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, this “Game of Thrones” prequel co-created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, which is set 300 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” tells the story of House Targaryen.

SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE (Limited Series)

Synopsis: An adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s classic series, Scenes from a Marriage, that re-examines the show’s iconic depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple.

LANDSCAPERS (Limited Series)

Synopsis: Inspired by real events, the drama explores the lives of convicted killers Susan and Christopher Edwards and asks how this devoted and mild-mannered couple came to kill Susan’s parents and bury them in the back garden of their Mansfield home, in a crime that remained undiscovered for over a decade. This blackly comic, narratively playful true crime drama is based on extensive research, hours of interviews and direct access to the accused, who have always protested their innocence of murder.

Synopsis: Terrifying and darkly comic THE BABY gleefully deconstructs the “joy of motherhood,” exploring the powerful anxiety of whether or not to have children, questioning who gets to choose “motherhood” and who doesn’t.

Synopsis: This fast-break series chronicles the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers, one of sports’ most revered and dominant dynasties — a team that defined its era, both on and off the court.

OSLO (Film)

Synopsis: Adapted from the Tony Award-winning play of the same name, the film is based on a true story of negotiations between implacable enemies — the secret back-channel talks, unlikely friendships and quiet heroics of a small but committed group of Israelis, Palestinians and one Norwegian couple that led to the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords.

Synopsis: Directed with a deeply personal approach by Nanfu Wang (“One Child Nation”), who was born in China and now lives in the United States, the film explores the parallel campaigns of misinformation waged by leadership and the devastating impact on citizens of both countries. With emotional first-hand accounts and startling, on-the-ground footage, the film weaves a revelatory picture of cover-ups and misinformation, while also highlighting the strength and resilience of the healthcare workers, activists and family members who risked everything to communicate the truth.

Synopsis: From first-time creators Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, the series follows a group of young graduates competing for a limited number of permanent positions at a leading international investment bank in London. INDUSTRY gives an insider's view of the blackbox of “high finance” through the eyes of an outsider, Harper Stern (Herrold), a talented young woman from upstate New York. Following a group of young grads fueled by ambition, youth, romance and drugs, the series examines issues of gender, race, class, and privilege in the workplace as these impressionable young minds begin to forge their identities within the pressure cooker environment and sensory blitz of Pierpoint & Co's trading floor, where meritocracy is promised but hierarchy is king.

Synopsis: Lord Asriel has opened a bridge to a new world, and, distraught over the death of her best friend, Lyra follows Asriel into the unknown. In a strange and mysterious abandoned city she meets Will, a boy from our world who is also running from a troubled past. Lyra and Will learn their destinies are tied to reuniting Will with his father but find their path is constantly thwarted as a war begins to brew around them. Meanwhile, Mrs. Coulter searches for Lyra, determined to bring her home by any means necessary.

THE VOW PART TWO (Documentary Series)

Synopsis: The HBO documentary series THE VOW will continue with a second installment of episodes, to air in 2021. Set against the backdrop of the federal trial of The United States against Keith Raniere, THE VOW Part Two will offer an exclusive view into Raniere's innermost circle. It delves into the stories of NXIVM’s top leadership in the US and Mexico, and into powerful, intimate stories of DOS members. Part Two follows the legal and emotional journeys of the group’s founders, supporters and defectors as new evidence and stunning revelations come to light while federal prosecutors and defense attorneys battle for opposing views of justice in a case caught in the national spotlight.

Credits: The Emmy®-winning, Academy Award nominated team of Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer will again direct and executive produce.

CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM (Comedy Series)

Synopsis: Originally debuting on HBO in 2001 and presenting 100 episodes to date, the series stars “Seinfeld” co-creator Larry David as an over-the-top version of himself in an unsparing but tongue-in-cheek depiction of his fictionalized life. The comedy series continues to prove how seemingly trivial details of one's day-to-day life – a cold cup of coffee, a stained shirt, a missing toothbrush – can precipitate a chain of misfortune to hilarious effect.

GENTLEMAN JACK (Drama Series)

Synopsis: From Sally Wainwright, this series tells a remarkable and unlikely love story, set in the complex, changing world of 1832 Halifax, the cradle of the industrial revolution. Starring Suranne Jones, it focuses on landowner Anne Lister and her determination to change the fate of Shibden Hall, her faded ancestral home, by re-opening the coal mines and marrying well.
