Bristol band Make Friends reveal the video for new single ‘Kung-Fu’ today, watch below.

An ode to honing creative skills and hard graft, guitarist David Thomas explains why the essence of this track feels so important to them as we approach the closing weeks of a turbulent year for everyone in music...

“Kung-Fu translates to ‘hard / skilful work’ and ‘time spent’. This seems a fitting title for a time where most of those in creative industries, having trained for years to develop skills utilising their hands and feet, are now being told to retrain. It’s about protecting the value in anything that takes your time and energy.”

Today's new video, homemade by the band's singer Tom Andrews, plays with the idea of having to “retrain” and the slogan put forward by the government in the wake of the pandemic, by showing a very different form of hard graft.

Stylistically the band’s previous single ‘Hesitate’ explored a new, smooth and laid back side to their sound, encapsulating the later summer nights in early September, and with this release sees the four-piece kicking back into gear with a big empowering dance tune to see out the year - something Make Friends can be more than trusted to deliver on.

Following a headline show at Rough Trade Bristol in March the four-piece set their sites on returning to stages in 2021, and have have just signed a new deal with Marshall's live agency - another good reason to celebrate Kung Fu and Marshall arts! The next UK tour announcement can be expected soon.

Produced by Peter Sené (Everything Everything) and mixed by Bruno Ellingham (The Maccabees), ‘Kung-Fu’ adds to a potent array of guitar driven indie hits, like ‘Knowing Makes It Worse’ and ‘Ellie’ from the debut EP ‘Hi’. It’s a defiant and optimistic new single that launches in the wake of support from the likes of Clash, BBC Radio 6 Music, Radio X and significant editorial support from Spotify and Apple Music, as well as last month’s release of their BBC Maida Vale live session.

‘Kung-Fu’ is out now via Funnel Music below.
