Adam Lambert and more pay tribute to 'true icon' David Bowie

Adam Lambert is among the music stars who have paid tribute to the late David Bowie.

The music legend passed away on Sunday (January 10) aged 69 after an 18-month battle with cancer.

US star Lambert took to Twitter to express his admiration for the Brit, saying:

"I love how Bowie challenged people's perception of gender stereotypes and what an outsider truly was. He was SO ahead of his time.

"Bowie was one of the bravest artists of the century. A true icon. He is the first and foremost Glam Rockstar. Rebel Rebel, Life On Mars, Lady Grinning Soul...."

Kanye West meanwhile said: "David Bowie was one of my most important inspirations, so fearless, so creative, he gave us magic for a lifetime."

Madonna opined: "Talented. Unique. Genius. Game Changer. The Man who Fell to Earth. Your Spirit Lives on Forever!"

Collaborator Brian Eno simply said: "Words cannot express: RIP David Bowie."

Queen drummer Roger Taylor wrote: "David Bowie: The cleverest and most interestingly brilliant man of our time. What a vacuum he leaves, and how he will be missed."

Pixies said: "RIP David Bowie. A true Inspiration."

One Direction's Louis Tomlinson added: "RIP David Bowie. A music legend!"

UK Prime Minister David Cameron has even spoken about the loss, writing on Twitter:

"I grew up listening to and watching the pop genius David Bowie. He was a master of re-invention, who kept getting it right. A huge loss."

Bowie died just days after the release of his 25th album 'Blackstar'.
