Adele single achieves biggest US sales week since 1997

Adele's comeback single 'Hello' has sold the most amount of units in the US in a week since 1997.

The singer unleashed the track recently as the first cut from upcoming third album '25'.

It sold 1.1m copies in its first week on sale in the US.

This means that it had the third best sales week in the country for a single.

The current record holder is Elton John's 1997 hit 'Candle in the Wind 1997/Something About the Way You Look Tonight'.

That song, released in tribute of the late Princess Diana, sold 3.4m copies in its first week on sale in October 1997.

Its second week saw the tune sell 1.2m units.

Adele meanwhile will release '25' - her first record since 2011's '21' - on November 20.
