Mos Def announces retirement after getting detained in South Africa

Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) has confirmed his immediate retirement from both the music and film industries and also shared a new freestyle about his life in South Africa.

The multi-Grammy winner announced his retirement last night from Cape Town via a mixtape hosted on Kanye West's website. 'A message from Yasiin Bey' begins with him referencing West's new single 'No More Parties in LA' ("No more parties in S.A.") before he goes on to detail the reasons for his detainment in the country and protesting his innocence.

The 'Ms. Fat Booty' singer was detained in South Africa for allegedly trying to leave the country by using a 'world passport'. However, his spokesperson rubbished the reports and told OkayAfrica that the allegations were false, as Bey was trying to leave South Africa to go to Ethiopia to perform at the Selam Music Festival and was using a 'world passport' issued by the World Service which the South African government accepted as a official document last August.

The spokesperson explained that Bey prefers not use his U.S passport for "social and political reasons."
