Singer-songwriter Prince has announced a new tour, beginning in December, called ‘Welcome 2 America’.

The Purple Rain singer announced the tour last night in a press conference at New York’s Apollo Theater, and described it as ‘a series of events’ that will feature him, his band and a host of other performers.

He added that the tour is ‘best described as what we’ve all been waiting for’, and will feature artists including Maceo Parker, Janelle Monae, Lalah Hathaway, Mint Condition, Graham Central Station, Cassandra Wilson, Sheila E, and Esperanza Spalding.

The 52-year-old advised fans to bring friends, bring your children and bring foot spray, "cause it’s gon’ be funky".

Dates have yet to be announced, but the singer said shows will likely be in the New York area and will start on a ‘Purple day in December 2010’.
