Damon Albarn forms new band with Flea

Multi-Tasker extraordinaire, Damon Albarn, has revealed that he is “three quarters of the way through” an album with Red Hot Chili Pepper, Flea and African drummer, Tony Allen.

The Gorillaz front man, who is currently in the middle of an extensive world tour with the cartoon rockers, said the project, which is currently unnamed, will centre on Allen, who drummed for his side-project, The Good, The Bad and The Queen.

“[It’s] another band with Tony Allen; centred around what he does,” said Albarn. “But this time it’s him and me and Flea from The Chili Peppers and some of my favourite African musicians will be involved also. Flea of course is an anagram for Fela and Flea is so into his music – so that’s been great.”

The collaboration originally came about because Flea journeyed to Nigeria as part of Albarn’s Africa Express project – an initiative which was founded on the frustration at a lack of representation African music had at Geldof’s Live 8.
