Hazlitt: the classical Amy Winehouse

Imagem Production Music, part of Imagem who own the Boosey & Hawkes and Rodgers & Hammerstein catalogues, and are home to classical music legends such as Bernstein, Britten, and Stravinsky have just signed an album with ‘the Amy Winehouse of Classical Music.’

Heavily tattooed composer Leni White, who composes music under the name Hazlitt, gained an unwanted reputation for outrageous behaviour after being thrown out of The London Bach Choir following scandalous activities at a private carol service at St James’ Palace for Prince Charles. But having already been spotted by the global sportswear brand Adidas who featured her on their recent World cup TV advert, it is believed that her brand of classical music, dubbed ‘Neo’ can reach out both to a youth market, more accustomed to listening to N Dubz and Grime Music, as well as the more traditional classical music lovers. If that wasn’t enough, they even discovered her on Myspace!

Many in the conservative world of classical music many have seen beyond her piercings, tattoos and unconventional appearance and behaviour to recognise Hazlitt as one of the most exciting new composers to have emerged in recent times. Hazlitt is being courted by the world’s largest classical music labels thanks to the revolutionary backing to record her album by Imagem Production Music. Her music looks to be gaining the acclaim and recognition her talent deserves.

In joining Imagem Production Music for development, Hazlitt joins a fabulous lineage of legendary composers. Composer Clint Mansell who was nominated for best original score at last year’s Oscars is mentoring Hazlitt and she counts everyone from William Orbit to Gabriella Cilmi as fans. Hazlitt’s music will already be familiar to the British public after it was used on the Adidas football commercial ‘The Quest’ starring Lionel Messi and David Villa, while her self-released debut album ‘Requiem for Little Bird’ looks set to introduce a younger and edgier street audience to classical music.

“Imagem Production Music stumbled across Hazlitt’s music on MySpace and we were immediately blown away by its quality and originality,” says Imagem’s Dave Fuller. “Hazlitt is one of the most talented new composers we have come across in a long time and it’s no surprise that her music is being snapped up for multi-million pound sports brand commercials – if, for example, Beethoven or Wagner were making music today there is a good chance they would be making epic music for similar visual spectaculars. Hazlitt is a real talent and Imagem Production Music takes enormous pride in nurturing the new generation of British composers.”
