The Smiths get official Twitter account almost 30 years after split

Twitter was set on fire today (April 6) when a verified account was created for the iconic '80's band, The Smiths (see picture on left).

However, Warner Music UK confirmed that the account (@TheSmiths_Official) is solely for marketing purposes. The band are not reforming.

A post on the account now reads:

"Please note this account is purely to celebrate the history and the music of The Smiths."

The band fronted by Morrissey, split in 1987.

In 2013, Morrissey said:

"A reformation will never take place because reformations can only work if the same spirit that made the band form in the first place still exists.

"If this Government stepped down, I'll reform the band."

He had previously said:

"I would rather eat my own testicles than reform The Smiths, and that's saying something for a vegetarian."
