Alanis Morissette suing ex-business manager for stealing $4.7m

Singer-songwriter, Alanis Morissette, once termed as the 90's Queen of angst, is suing her ex-business manager, who she claims has robbed her of at least $4.7m.

The Canadian-American icon is seeking damages in excess of $15 million.

The Grammy Award-winner, who rose to fame with her debut album, 'Jagged Little Pill', filed a complaint in the Los Angeles County Superior Court yesterday (May 17).

Morissette is suing both Jonathan Schwartz and GSO Business Management for breach of fiduciary duty, conversion, fraud and negligence.

"Defendants concealed these distributions from Morissette, convincing her that she was in tremendous financial shape when, in fact, they were draining her assets and leading her on a road that could have led to financial ruin," states the complaint.

Schwartz managed Morissette's finances from 2009 - 2016. His role included collecting income, managing investment accounts and paying bills for her. She eventually fired him because he failed to respond to her questions when she inquired about information regarding her finances.

The suit claims, after altering his explanation on several occasions, Schwartz stated that the money was an "investment" in "one or more illegal marijuana 'grow' businesses."

The singer claims Schwartz not only stole from her, but he also transferred $8m from investment accounts.

The investigation revealed that Mr. Schwartz was maintaining a lavish lifestyle, which included a $50,000 holiday to Bora Bora and a gambling dept of $75,000 at a Casino in the Bahamas. He also owes the American government a substantial amount for unpaid taxes.
