UK festivals and nightclubs need to take measures after heightened terror alert

Neil Basu, deputy assistant commissioner with the Metropolitan Police, has told The Sunday Times that nighclubs and festivals could be targeted by terrorists.

Speaking at an anti-terrorist briefing at Wembley stadium, Basu said that entertainment events were 'right at the top of the agenda.' Major stadiums have already adopted security measures but nightclubs have not according to Basu.

He said: "I’d want to see the owners and event managers taking the same kind of security precautions. These people are perfectly happy to target civilians with maximum terror impact.

"Crowded places were always a concern for us, but now they are right at the top of the agenda.”

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, announced on May 27 that he has launched a review of the city's ability to tackle a major terrorist event that will investigate how emergency services will react if simiultaneous attacks were launched.

However, there is a concern that rural festivals won't have the same protection as armed forces could be based almost 100 miles away from an event.

He said:

"This is where you put a small town into a small area for a couple of hours.

That’s exactly the same with large concert venues and much harder [to safeguard] with a large open-air festival."

Last December Paris' Bataclan venue was the target of a horrific terrorist attack during an Eagles of Death Metal concert. The venue will reopen later this year.
