5 Seconds of Summer's Ashton Irwin has cut his hair short for the first time since he was 8 years old. 

Unveiling a pile of cut hair on the floor in an Instagram photo yesterday (August 12), the Aussie star's action has caused a flurry of excitement amongst his 4.8 m followers.

Captioning the photo: 

'I have short hair for the first time since I was approximately 8 years old.'

This set off a hashtag trend of #ripAshtonsHair on Twitter.

Fellow bandmate, Calum Hood, uploaded a photo of him with Irwin hiking in Hawaii earlier this week on August 10.

Three months ago in May, One Direction's Harry Styles cut his long hair to the shock of 1D fans worldwide. This was for a WW2 movie role.

5 Seconds of Summer unveiled a remix for their latest single, 'Girls Talk Boys,' yesterday (August 13).
