US stars Lauren Jauregui and Caitlyn Jenner proud winners of 2017 LGBT Awards

Celebrities were out in full force last night (May 12) for the British LGBT Awards ceremony in London.

The annual event was held at the Grand Connaught Rooms in the Capital's West End. It celebrates individuals and organisations working to advance the rights of gay and transgender people. And among the many winners this year, the awards also recognised the work of American stars Fifth Harmony singer Lauren Jauregui and transgender campaigner Caitlyn Jenner.

Lauren Jauregui, who came out as bisexual last November, was chosen by members of the public as the Celebrity of the Year. Although the star could not turn up in person due to currently being on tour with Fifth Harmony, she did send a video message to thank everyone (see below).

The singer has been a huge activist for homophobia, The LGBTQ community, and women's rights since Trump came into power in the last year. She previously said:

"I am angry almost every day I wake up to a barrage of new things this government is trying to dismantle and create to oppress the American people."

Caitlyn Jenner won the Loud and Proud award. The former Olympian, who has been campaigning for trans rights, told The Independent that she was "furious" at Donald Trump's decision to remove Obama-era guidelines protecting transgender students.
