James Arthur plays open-air gig after having to cancel another due to dangerous lightning strikes

Lightning strikes forced British star James Arthur to cancel his open-air gig in Scarborough this week.

The platinum-selling singer-songwriter was set to perform at the Scarborough Open Air Theatre on Thursday (July 26) but due to a recent heatwave, heavy thunderstorms swept across the UK in parts of the country.

In a tweet, Arthur apologised but said that the promoters and the council had "decided it's not safe for the show to go ahead". He also offered fans a refund.

In a statement, the promoters said: "Due to the adverse weather conditions, and the continued lightning strikes in the Scarborough area, this evening's performance with James Arthur is unable to proceed.

"We extend our sincerest apologies to everyone who has come to the show, but safety must come first.

"We are investigating the possibility of rescheduling the show and will post an update as soon as possible."

Last night (July 27), James Arthur performed at Outside Live's open-air concert in Sennowe Park, Norfolk.

The director of Outside Live, Morris Muter, said: "James is one of the most in demand singer/songwriters in the UK today and we are delighted to be bringing him to Norfolk this summer.

“His live shows are fantastic, full of emotion, great music, and of course, feature one of British music’s most unmistakable and unique voices. This is going to be some night.”

Since winning The X Factor in 2012, James Arthur's debut single "Impossible" - off his self-titled debut solo album - debuted at No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart in its first week of release.

Since then, it has gone on to sell over 1.4 million copies in the UK alone, making it the most successful winner's single in the show's history. It has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide.

He released "Say You Won't Let Go" on 9 September 2016 as the lead single from his second studio album "Back from the Edge". The single reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming his second chart topper and making him the first male winner so far to have two UK No. 1 singles.

The global music star has released two albums, embarked on several sold out tours and been nominated for three BRIT awards.
