Sofia Carson Supports India's Decriminalisation of Gay Relationships

Sofia Carson is amongst the stars to show support for the LGBTQ's recent legal victory in India, which saw being gay decriminalised yesterday (September 6) by the Indian High Supreme Court.

It has been illegal to be gay in India since the arrival of the British colonial-era Section 377 penal code in 1861.

Taking to Twitter, the actress and singer wrote: "Today, India decriminalized consensual same-sex relations, overturning a law that has existed since colonial rule. #loveisloveislove"

Eighty percent of the Indian population are Hindu, 14% are Muslim and the remaining 6% are Buddhists, Christians or Sikhs. The Hindu religion is neither opposed nor does it promote gay relationships and so they have been tolerated in India. However, now it is no longer a criminal act. In fact, the famous Hindu text of the Karma Sutra says it is a sexual experience to be explored.

It is said that being gay was not warmly welcomed in Indian society due to the influence of the British Empire rather than the Hindu religion itself.

It is still illegal, either under general law or Sharia Law, to be gay in Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Comoros, Egypt, Eritea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Mauritious, Morocco, Namibia, Nigera, Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Indonesia, Iran, Kuwait, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Syria, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Yemen, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Chechnya, Cook Islands, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Soloman Islands, Tonga and Tuvalu.

Recently Carson released her brand new track with R3HAB called Rumors.

She also wowed more crowds at UNICEF's Summer Gala in the Italian island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean, visited Kenya for charity, and finished filming the role of Evie in Descendants 3
