Phoebe Snow dies

Singer, Phoebe Snow, died this morning (April 26) following complications from a brain haemorrhage she suffered more than a year ago.

The 58-year-old downscaled her singing career to care for her disabled daughter who died in 2007 after being born with a brain condition.

Snow's biggest hit was the bluesy number 'Poetry Man' in 1975 which reached the top five in the US charts and earned her a Grammy nomination as best new artist.

Snow's voice is well-known to later generations as she sang the theme to NBC's 'A Different World' and several jingles. These jobs were to fund her daughter's care needs.

She regularly played low-key venues in New York and was also a frequent guest on Howard Stern's radio show. Stern invited her to sing at his 2008 wedding to Beth Ostrosky.

Mayor Rudy Giuliani presented her with New York's Cultural Achievement Award in 1998.

Before the brain haemorrhage she had been working on a new album and had plans to tour.

Her manager, Sue Cameron, told the Associated Press that since the haemorrhage she was kept in a medically induced coma and had suffered from blood clots, pneumonia and congestive heart failure.
