Harry Styles Leads British LGBT Awards Shortlist 2021

Harry Styles is leading this year's British LGBT Awards shortlist.

The star-studded list for Britain's biggest LGBT+ awards event was released today on April 20, prior to the red-carpet ceremony which is set to take place in London on August 27. The Awards, in association with NatWest and Tesco, honor leading LGBT+ activists, allies and celebrity figures who have contributed to advance the rights of LGBT+ people during the past 12 months.

Harry Styles, Sam Smith, Cara Delevingne and RuPaul Charles are amongst the big-name stars nominated.

Also nominated are Killing Eve actress Jodie Comer and RuPaul's Drag Race UK royalty Michelle Visage, who are nominated for the Celebrity Ally Award. Other nominees are comedian Jennifer Saunders, TV presenter Dermot O'Leary and Spice Girl Melanie C. The prize for this award was previously won in 2017 by Prince William.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Demi Lovato, Fleabag actor Andrew Scott, Queer Eye star Tan France and Sex Education star Gillian Anderson are also in the running for the Celebrity of the Year award.

Grammy-award winner Lizzo, non-binary artist Sam Smith and Rockabye singer Anne-Marie are set to battle it out for the MTV-sponsored Music Artist of the Year gong, while Channel 4’s hit AIDS drama It’s a Sin is shortlisted for the Media Moment prize. The series had record viewing figures when it was released earlier in the year. It captured the story of the AIDS pandemic and how it affected London's gay community in the '80s.

Awards organizers also announced a one-off Football Ally award. Liverpool FC's captain Jordan Henderson, Arsenal’s Héctor Bellerín, Leicester star Jamie Vardy and TV sports pundit Gary Lineker are among those nominated for the award. The award is only being handed out this year and will look at why LGBT+ inclusion remains a taboo subject for the sport.

Charities in the running for awards on the night include UK Black Pride, It Gets better and The Outside Project.

Sarah Garrett, MBE, British LGBT Awards Founder, said: "These awards shine a light on those who have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the LGBT+ community during what has been an extremely challenging 12 months.

"The nominees, which include an exciting mix of famous LGBT+ faces, allies and organisations have all demonstrated a commitment to advancing LGBT+ rights.

"The awards on 27 August, which will take place after lockdown restrictions are eased, will be a huge celebration that’s needed more than ever."

Last month Styles opened the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, and won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance for ‘Watermelon Sugar’ - his first ever Grammy win. He won the award over Doja Cat (‘Say So’), Billie Eilish (‘everything i wanted’), Dua Lipa (‘Don’t Start Now’), Taylor Swift (‘cardigan’), and Justin Bieber (‘Yummy’).

The acclaimed British superstar kicked off the televised ceremony with a performance featuring Devonté Hynes. His sophomore album Fine Line was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album, and ‘Adore You’ was up for Best Music Video.
