BIRTHDAY THEME TO CELEBRATE 30 YEARS OF KERRANG! MAGAZINE

***PLEASE NOTE EVENT IS NOW CALLED THE KERRANG! AWARDS FUELLED BY RELENTLESS ENERGY DRINK***

It has become known as one of the most rocking awards ceremony on the planet and this year was no different as rock stars galore - from 30 Second To Mars to Alice Cooper - turned out in force tonight to attend the infamous Kerrang! Awards fuelled by Relentless Energy Drink, in East London.

This year’s Kerrang! Awards - which were hosted by Slipknot's Corey Taylor and Anthrax's Scott Ian - had an extra special twist as they coincide with the 30th anniversary of Kerrang!, which first launched on 6 June 1981.   Torture Garden came up trumps by providing a host of characters to greet guests on arrival – including Vivid Angel, a human fortune telling machine, and a Dita Von Teese tribute act courtesy of Carrie-Ann Odell.

Evil clowns, jelly & ice cream, birthday cake and video birthday messages from bands such as Metallica, Iron Maiden and Paramore all helped to make tonight’s awards one of the best yet!

Metallica sent in the following message, “Happy 30th Birthday to our friends at Kerrang!  Thank you and we’re right behind you and here’s to at least another 30!”.

American rockers 30 Seconds To Mars, formed by Jared Leto and his brother Shannon, did the double by taking away the awards for Best International Band (presented by Russian Standard Vodka) for the third time, and Best Single (presented by Kerrang! Radio), for their controversial epic ‘Hurricane’, which was released at the end of 2010.

Despite being nominated for five awards, My Chemical Romance came home with just one; the award for Best Video, for their top 40 single ‘Na Na Na’. The highly conceptualised video shows the band as ‘The Killjoys’, a gang of outlaws, who get chased by comic book author Grant Morrison.

British Steel ruled on the night with two bands from Sheffield – Bring Me The Horizon and Def Leppard - taking awards home with them. Bring Me The Horizon were awarded the prestigious title of Best Album (presented by Young Minds) for their UK Top 20 album ‘There Is A Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is A Heaven, Let’s Keep It A Secret’, beating off stiff competition from Avenged Sevenfold, Escape The Fate, My Chemical Romance and The Blackout.

Def Leppard – set to headline the Download Festival on Friday, were honoured with the Kerrang! Inspiration Award (presented by HMV). As one of the world’s best selling artists with worldwide album sales topping 65 million, Def Leppard remain one of the crown jewels of British rock music.

Two absolute legends in the rock world, both renowned for their controversy, extravagant performances and global notoriety were honoured at tonight’s Kerrang! Awards fuelled by Relentless Energy Drink. As previously announced, Ozzy Osbourne was crowned Kerrang! Legend, and this award was presented to Ozzy’s son Jack Osbourne by shock-rocker Rob Zombie. Alice Cooper was awarded the title of Kerrang! Icon (presented by Orange Amplification) for his services to the rock & metal world and pioneering a brand new style of theatrical performance which have undoubtedly inspired artists such as KISS, Marilyn Manson and even Lady GaGa.

Additionally, American acts All Time Low were presented with Best Live (presented by Download Festival) and nu-metal pioneers Korn were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall Of Fame, in tribute to their immense impact on the metal scene in bringing to the world a new kind of metal – inspiring subsequent acts Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit and many more.

British bands were not at a loss on the special award front, with Welsh ragga metallers Skindred collecting The Devotion Award (sponsored by Relentless Energy Drink) and Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro picking up the Kerrang! Classic Songwriter award (presented by Zippo) – in acknowledgement of their many great songs and hit singles including ‘Saturday Superhouse’, ‘Folding Stars’, ‘Mountain’ and ‘Many Of Horror’.

To be crowned the ‘Best’ at any awards ceremony is a true achievement, Surrey pop-punkers You Me At Six would hardly disagree, following their award for Best British Band (presented by Rising Records), taking the crown away from three-time winners Bullet For My Valentine to bring the flag back to England (in fact it’s been all Welsh winners for this award since 2005!)

Best British Newcomer went to York metalcore Asking Alexandria who recently wowed Americans with their debut national TV performance on the infamous Jimmy Kimmel show, with Best International Newcomer going to one of the hottest new bands in town, Black Veil Brides, whose dramatic looks and much anticipated new album has already earned them two Kerrrang! Covers.

Remarking on the winners Kerrang!'s Editor-In-Chief Phil Alexander stated: “This year is a landmark year for Kerrang!. In that sense it is fitting that from Alice Cooper to Def Leppard and on to Asking Alexandria there are at least three generations of musicians here picking up awards. Kerrang! is one of the few truly multi-platform brands in modern music, and we’re pleased to have supported all the acts recognized this evening. As ever Kerrang! prides itself in looking forward and tonight’s awards show tells us that the future is decidedly loud.”

Presenters on the night included Enter Shikari, Tom Stade, Alter Bridge, Johnny Doom and Matt Stocks from Kerrang! Radio, Rob Zombie, Puddle of Mudd and The Darkness.

The official Aftershow took place at The Garage sponsored by Relentless Energy Drink in London with guest DJs courtesy of Kerrang! Radio’s Matt Stocks and Johnny Doom and Crossfire Sound System featuring Zac Leeks and James Sherry.

In addition to being crowned Kerrang! Legend, Ozzy Osbourne will play exclusive ‘Kerrang! 30th Birthday’ show at London’s HMV Hammersmith Apollo on 21 June is on sale now, tickets from www.aloud.com. Support comes from Revoker.

‘K! Awards 2011: The Winners’ will TX on Kerrang! TV at 11am Monday 13 June, with all the backstage gossip and interviews with winners. Tune in to Kerrang! TV via 368 Sky Channel or 342 Virgin Channel.

Kerrang! Radio 105.2FM will broadcast an Awards Special from 7pm Friday 10 June with Matt Stocks with news bulletins running across the day and into the weekend.
