Reading and Leeds Festivals prepared for freak weather

The Reading and Leeds Festival organiser, Melvin Benn, has told BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat that plans are in place to help combat any possible extreme weather conditions.

Earlier this week the BBC's weather website reported that hail was expected to arrive at Reading Festival tomorrow (August 27) but that threat has since diminished. Light rain showers are now expected today (August 26) and Sunday (August 28). Rain is only expected at Leeds today (August 26).

Speaking with regard to last week's tragic accident at Pukkelpop in Belgium, Benn said:

"If we had something similar [to Pukkelpop] I know what actions I would take in order to make sure people were safe. I have to table top exercises with the emergency services about the actions I would take in the event of all of those things.

"Believe me, there is no scenario of an eventuality that I have not looked at, including freak storms. I know how I would deal with it to ensure peoples' safety. The level of effort over safety is immense. It's the thing which keeps me awake at night."

Thousands of fans have already turned up at Reading and Leeds to see headline performances by Muse, My Chemical Romance, Pulp and The Strokes.

At Reading My Chemical Romance headline today (August 26), The Strokes tomorrow (August 27), and Muse on Sunday (August 28).

Reading's NME/Radio 1 Stage sees Beady Eye headline today (August 26), Jane's Addiction (August 27), and 2manydjs on Sunday (August 28).

The line-up for Reading and Leeds Festivals leaked in a magazine advert in March 21 this year.
