From his recording studio in Cyprus, the alt-indie artist and producer KAIS has delivered his artfully insightful 3-track EP, Hot Air Balloon.

Track 1, Horizon, starts as a shoegazey kaleidoscopic pool of reverb before spilling into one of KAIS’ most experimental pieces yet. With Radiohead-Esque kicking percussion bringing the structure and the sharp as a cleaver angular guitars bleeding the atmosphere, the single psychedelically picks up magnetic gravity to pull you into the nuancedly strident emotion.

The chorally immersive tones carry through to Track 2, Turning to Gold; a humility and compassion instilled proclamation of unconditional love told through sombrely gentle tenacity and lyrical sincerity. "You are more than someone, you are my rising sun" are words everyone deserves to hear. Thanks to KAIS, they can. On repeat.

The title single, Hot Air Balloon, blends the anthemics of Muse with the efficacious indie hooks of Oasis, finding plenty of room for the off-kilter grungy rock licks that add resilience to the progressively evocative single. The earworm takes an unassuming object and uses it to verse on the notion of mental sanctity and freedom from the mechanics of modern enslavement. All to the tune of the 90s Britpop era aesthetics mixed with rich psychedelic synthetics.

KAIS said:

“Horizon is a Citizen Cope / David Gilmor-esque inspired ode to tapping into one’s inherent free spirit, which commonly unearths in the lovers’ bond. It paints an image of a man that once swam with his beloved in the magic of a summer night’s sea and attempts to reconnect with the ubiquitous “baby how’s your day?”

“Turning to Gold is a hymn of lovers as they traverse life’s highs and lows. It reaches into metaphysical spheres while weighing on the fact that bliss cannot be found when one is merely dreaming.

“Hot Air Balloon is a metaphor for pregnancy. As the process unfolds, whereby a spirit permeates and rises into the boundless world, a Hot Air Balloon rises into the ether (where our thoughts drift and amalgamate).”

Amelia Vandergast, the Executive Editor at A&R Factory said:

“If any contemporary can unwrite all of the false premises of capitalist romanticism and affirm that the beauty of love and life lies in the simplest of moments, it is KAIS. He knows just how to bring his epiphanous concepts to life so that the sonic end result is just as mind-bending as his laureate-like revelations.”

About

Canadian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer KAIS (Kais Khoury) takes the complexities of the human condition as inspiration for his fusionist sound that sonically melds indie, psych, soul-infused blues, rock and folk.

At the outset of his career, he addressed global topics before exploring the drab difficulties and profound beauty of being human. As a lover of the metaphysical, KAIS’ work consists of finding the balance between natural inclinations and the demands in an ego-driven late-stage capitalist world.

In 2014, he took part in the Mayor of London Big Busk and graduated with a diploma in Music Production and Sound Engineering. He toured Vancouver, Toronto and Seattle with a full band in 2016 and 2017, received an honorary mention in the 2016 International Songwriting Competition, a Canadian Best Out of Province nomination at the 13th Annual Toronto Independent Music Awards and a Lyrics Finalist position in the 2017 USA Songwriting Competition.

In 2020, KAIS joined the London Indie sync licensing roster, North Note; in 2021, he was interviewed by BBC Radio London host Robert Elms for his 2018 single, Take Me Home.
