Arctic Monkeys have vowed that they will never return to the sound of their first album.

The Sheffield quartet, who are currently supporting the Black Keys on their North American tour, told the Calgary Herald that they want to evolve with each record and have no intentions of repeating the formula of 2006 debut 'Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not' in the future.

Drummer Matt Helders said: “For us, it seems obvious to do something different when you make a new record. I know that bands can successfully carry on by having a similar sound forever, can have a full career out of it.

“Obviously many do and that works. It’s just that I don’t think we’d ever want to do that. We couldn’t make a record like our first record again, it would sound a bit fake.”

The 26-year-old went onto admit that their recent darker material may have alienated some of their early fanbase but that it was a direction that the band felt they had to pursue:

“Obviously, Humbug got a mixed reaction and different reaction than maybe the other records, but for us it was the most important record — to do something like that and completely different.

“We had to do that to become the band that we are now, in a way, without sounding too dramatic. It was a big deal for us to go and do something completely different.”
