Avril Lavigne shares photos of Lyme Disease battle

Avril Lavigne took to Instagram yesterday (September 22) to share two photos documenting her visit to her doctors in her bid to fight Lyme Disease.

One photo shows her smiling at the camera whilst sitting on a examination couch with what looks to be an overnight bag next to her.

The second photo is of Lavigne's arm post blood work with 13 blood-filled vials next to it and a band-aid where a needle was used to draw the blood. Her tattoo with the logo for her clothing line Abbey Dawn features alongside her skull and cupcake tattoo.

Not losing her sense of humour, she used the hashtag '#DrOfficePhotoshoot'.

Lavigne captioned the first photo:

'This journey continues...' and added a lyric from her Special Olympics single 'Fly', writing: 'Just reach up, don't give up unto you touch the sky...We were all meant to fly.'

Whilst the second photo was captioned: ''On my way to good health', with the hashtags '#TakingCareOfMyself' and a defiant '#F***LymeDisease.'

Lavigne recently announced the break-up of her marriage to Chad Kroeger, the Nickleback singer. The couple married two years ago in 2013. It was Lavigne's second marriage, her first being to Sum 41 singer, Deryck Whibley which ended in 2010.

Lavigne came down with Lyme Disease in 2014 but it was initially misdiagnosed as depression. However, the star says she has gained more perspective on life as a result, and has thanked her fans for their love and support.

The disease is a bacterial infection spread by ticks which are tiny spider-like creatures found in woodland and heath areas. The condition can be treated effectively if it's detected early on.

Other famous people who are also fighting the condition include Alec Baldwin, Yolanda Foster from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Ben Stiller.
