Avril Lavigne's news on new LP "Complicated" by conspiracy theory

Avril Lavigne has given fans an update on her new album.

The news has reignited a conspiracy theory among sceptics who believe the 32-year-old died over a decade ago and was replaced by a lookalike named Melissa in order to continue her legacy.

When "Complicated" hitmaker Lavigne took to Twitter last night (May 16) to share with her 20.8 million followers that she is in the production stages of a new record, the follow-up to her self-titled album in 2013, she wrote:

"Beginning production this week for the album. Wahoo. Pouring my heart & soul into writing these new songs for you guys. Can't wait !!!! (sic)"

However, responding with scepticism rather than excitement, one fan commented: “Avril would never say “wahoo,” Melissa.”

Others shared gifs and memes, joking: “That’s what Melissa would want you to think.”

Lavigne has signed a new record deal with BMG US to release her first album in four years. She has been on a hiatus from the music industry after the release of her 2013 album, whilst battling with Lyme Disease and previously wrote on Twitter:

"Incredibly excited to be a part of the @BMG_US family & working with them on the release of #AL6! So excited to share more with you guys! (sic)"

The Canadian singer-songwriter has revealed that she is "coming out on the other side," following her battle with Lyme Disease, which can affect the skin, joints, heart, and nervous system. Sharing a picture on Facebook, she wrote at the time:

"Overcoming Lyme Disease. Feels good to have my Dr. smile and tell me how much progress I am making. I'm coming out on the other side batches!!! ‪#‎Fighter ‪#‎F**k LymeDisease (sic)"

In a previous statement about the inspiration behind her new album, she said:

“At this point in my career and in my life, I just wanted to put fresh energy around me and I feel like I’m having somewhat of a rebirth in my life. I’ve been faced with a lot, gone through a lot emotionally. The whole writing process has been therapeutic and empowering. This album is a natural process for me and it’s coming from a very honest place. My hope is that it is an inspiration to many people.”
