6 Music invites listeners to design Pixies t-shirt for Wear Your Old Band T-Shirt To Work Day

BBC Radio 6 Music’s ‘Wear Your Old Band T-Shirt To Work Day’ returns for its ninth year on Friday 25 November.

  • BBC Radio 6 Music’s Wear Your Old Band T-Shirt To Work Day is on Friday 25 November
  • Competition launches for listeners to design a band tee for Pixies to wear at London gigs

Ahead of this year’s celebrations Steve Lamacq has launched an exclusive competition inviting listeners to design a band t-shirt for alternative rock pioneers, Pixies. The winning design will be worn by the band at their Brixton Academy, London, gigs in November.

The competition is now open and will run until 6pm on Wednesday 23 November. Designs can be submitted via email to Lamacq.6music@bbc.co.uk and a shortlist will be selected by Steve Lamacq and his 6 Music team. From this, the winning design will be chosen by Pixies and announced on T-Shirt Day itself. For full details go to bbc.co.uk/6music.

Pixies say: “It’s great to be a part of Steve Lamacq’s Wear Your Old Band T Shirt To Work Day this year. Pixies t-shirts have always been worn with pride by our loyal fans. We’re very excited to see what designs the BBC Radio 6 Music audience come up with for us to wear.”

Steve Lamacq says: “T-Shirt Day has become a special moment in the 6 Music year. It’s a chance to flaunt our old shirts and share the stories that surround them. In some ways they’re like rock and roll medals, worn to mark all those crazy, brilliant nights out we’ve had, or the bands we’ve fallen in love with and followed. And rather than let the shirts sit idle and neglected in a drawer or a box in the loft, T-Shirt Day gives everyone an excuse to dig them out and wear them to work.

"Last year was the biggest T-Shirt Day yet with thousands of listeners getting involved and sending us pictures of the shirts they were wearing. And once again, we’re going to be throwing out the playlist for the day and playing nothing but music by the artists who appear on their shirts.”

Every year since Steve Lamacq launched the campaign back in 2007, 6 Music – which with 2.34m listeners has broken its audience record for the fifth time in a row (RAJARs, Q3, 2016) – has invited its listeners to dig out their most treasured tees, whether old or new, and wear their love for their favourite band or artist on their chest for the day. On Friday 25 November Steve calls out for music-lovers around the UK to wear their fave band t-shirt with pride wherever they are and whatever they’re doing and to send in their pictures via email, or post on Twitter and Instagram using #TShirtDay.

Throughout T-Shirt Day itself, from Shaun Keaveny’s Breakfast at 7am to the end of Lamacq’s show at 7pm, the station’s playlist will include tracks by the artists adorned on the t-shirts sent in by listeners (using #TShirtDay) and presenters will be following all of the activity throughout the day, sharing listeners’ stories and memories. In the week building up to T-Shirt Day, Steve will be speaking to key names from the band t-shirt business including Matt Cooper who designs images for the Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand, Laurie Vincent from Slaves who designs the band’s logos and merchandise, and legendary rock photographer Jill Furmanovsky.

Last year, famous faces including Kate Moss, Simon Pegg, Debbie Harry, AC/DC and Pete Townsend took part in the day sharing images of themselves wearing their most coveted band tee, along with thousands of listeners.
