With its breezy indie pop sensibilities and glinting guitar lines that harken back to the already-missed summer months, the Brighton rockers’ latest single ‘Side By Side’ takes us for a ride to the heady helter-skelter heights (and lows) of newfound romance.

Relationships in the summertime can often be as intoxicating as the season itself… the air thick and the chemistry so symbiotic, that we end up clinging onto one another more than the heat clings to our backs. How do we create space to breathe when we’re going at such a speed we can’t even see the ground around us? We know we should “take it slow” but we repeatedly risk collision anyway.

It’s this microcosmic ebb and flow that Opia Bloom explore with ‘Side By Side’ in more ways than one: “It's about that archetypal relationship where, without each other, you're lost. Those deep feelings of dependency and connection that mean you sometimes can't stand each other/it’s all a bit too much. That's what the structure of the song emulates. It dips and dives, rearing its head in all the right places as you experience this rollercoaster of conflicting emotions.”

Turbulent riffs kick up like dirt while piano notes fall with familiar reassurance, as though each instrument is learning to give way to the next; two bodies maneuvering between reckless passion and careful compromise before either one completely boils over. It’s a resonating rush that ‘Side By Side’ navigates expertly to create a stadium anthem in the making.

Memories also become jumbled in a haze when things click so instantaneously between people, in whatever form of relationship. Such as introducing a new bassist to the fold (John Bergin) or picking out a new collective name. This sentiment is depicted in the video’s non-linear approach (directed by Taylor Fawcett and shot using Super 8 film for a warmer, more nostalgic feel), capturing both the giddy reminiscence and buzz of a now fully-realised band, heading fast toward success in 2019.

UPCOMING GIGS:
25/01/19 – The Railway, Winchester
01/02/19 - Hope & Ruin Brighton
