Bay Area bred, LA-based, indie-pop duo Ruby Red (Daniel Laner & Fernando Fine) have shared their new EP, Saboteur out now via Virgin Music Label & Artist Services. The 6 track offering is a distillation of early adulthood given the circumstances—that is, a “coming-of-age” spent in isolation due to the pandemic. Alongside legends such as DallasK and Nineteen85, Ruby Red effortlessly paints a portrait of the youth in which they could no longer partake. The result sounds like a memory, a feverish, evocative, and admittedly romanticized smattering of colors that may not amount to an image that is “picture perfect”, but pleasant to look at nonetheless.

Explaining the method behind the madness, Laner & Fine stated, “Saboteur is a concept we came up with in the peak of isolation during the pandemic. We had formulated all these songs and ideas and realized that the thread that weaved it all together was this notion of self-sabotage. We realized we had been painting this glamorized world of self deprecation and almost … torture? As we dove deeper into it, we became increasingly aware of how self-sabotage had almost become a trend amongst our peers… and it felt like something worth calling attention to.”

Saboteur features lead singles “Too Late (To Call),” which debuted #1 on Apple Music’s Wildflower and a placement on Spotify’s New Music Friday, as well as “Overflow,” which debuted #1 on Spotify’s anti pop playlist. Ruby Red was also behind the treatments & direction for both visuals and their use of AI generated mutations, ear candles & more to prove their boundary pushing creativity. Today, they also spotlight brand new single “No Feeling Is Forever,” which “sets the scene for the rest of the project” according to Fine and explores the duo’s patience as they were forced to return home to Oakland, CA after years in Los Angeles on their own.

With the duo’s 2020 EP Area of Affect, Ruby Red was quickly recognized by key tastemakers like Zane Lowe. In 2022, Ruby Red went on Two Feet's latest run as well as 11 shows on Emmit Fenn's Far From Here Pt. 2 Tour with sold out shows in multiple cities including The Fonda in Los Angeles & Irving Plaza in New York City. Stream Saboteur now and stay tuned for more to come on Ruby Red as this should be the beginning of their breakout chapter.
