Jazz-soul singer Lady Blackbird has lent her voice to UK animal charity the RSPCA, for its Christmas charity appeal.

Blackbird has created a heartfelt version of the Bacharach and David standard ‘What The World Needs Now Is Love’ to soundtrack the charity’s Christmas Rescue campaign to raise funds to rescue “pandemic pets” bought during lockdown and then abandoned.

The film stars Peanut, a terrier crossbreed who was born at an RSPCA animal center after her pregnant mother was rescued from a house with dozens of other dogs who were not being properly cared for.

Originally written for Dionne Warwick, ‘What The World Needs Now Is Love’ was written with lyrics by Hal David and music by Burt Bacharach in 1965. It first became a hit in a version by Jackie DeShannon. BMG controls 50% of the publishing.

Lady Blackbird – dubbed the Grace Jones of jazz by BBC 6Music _ is tipped to become a major star. Signed by BMG in the UK, her debut album Black Acid Soul has received widespread critical acclaim.

BMG Synch Licensing Coordinator Isobel Leventhorpe, who pitched Blackbird for the ad, said, “It was great to be able to pair such an iconic song with such an extraordinary artist as Lady Blackbird.”
