The Songwriters Hall of Fame has announced its slate of nominees to be voted upon for induction at its 54th Annual Induction & Awards Gala on June 15, 2023, in New York City. Earlier this year, the annual awards event returned for the first-time, in-person, since the start of the pandemic.

Among the short-listed 12 non-performing songwriter nominees and 12 performing songwriter nominees include BMG songwriters Teddy Riley, credited with the creation of the New Jack Swing genre; Patti Smith, one of the leading voices of New York’s punk rock scene in the 1970s; BMG recording artist Bryan Adams, a 2022 Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee; and BMG recording artists Blondie, featuring BMG songwriters Debbie Harry and Chris Stein.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame is dedicated to recognizing the work and lives of those composers and lyricists who create music around the world. A songwriter with a notable catalog of songs qualifies for induction 20 years after the first significant commercial release of a song.
