Britney Spears likens making new album to therapy

Britney Spears believes working on her upcoming new album was like "therapy".

The singer is due to unleash her eighth studio album 'Britney Jean' on December 2 in the UK and a day later in the US.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the pop princess admitted that the process of creating the record - which she says is her most personal yet - was therapeutic.

The singer, who broke up with fiancé Jason Trawick in January, said:

"I would say it was kind of like therapy for me, this whole album. It just kind of transformed me. Like, this is my perspective, and then as you write something your perspective changes and after you're done writing something...for the better."

When asked why she needed therapy, Spears replied: "There are periods in everyone's life where you get kind of reclused inside and your creative outlet is cut off. Then sometimes it flows and all of a sudden it comes out and you're like, 'This is what I need to be doing'."

The former X Factor USA coach meanwhile is due to begin a two-year Las Vegas residency on December 27.
