INTERVIEW: TANYA G

“The recent resurgence of OldSkool Garage music has brought in massive demands for the OldSkool sound to revive the music scene. So we're bringing you a NewSkool artist with that distinctive OldSkool rhythm...”

From starting her rhythmic career with the dancing crew “Platinum” , to going to head-to-head with track/melodies in the studio. This artist who believes that “Anything is Possible” has proven that from touring with A list artists, to the likes of N-Dubz, Pussycat Dolls, Tinie Tempah and that is just a few to mention. From joining the feisty girl group “Fe-Nix” and being heavily involved with Universal Records; one might say Tanya has created quite a handful of memories and achievements to be proud of.

Tanya took some time to discuss her pending solo career and allowed us into a little bit of her life as well as recount some of these memories...

What is your earliest musical memory?

I can remember when I was about 4 or maybe 5 years old and my mother would always get me to perform to people who came to our house to visit. I remember standing on the kitchen table wearing cowboy boots, holding a salt and pepper shaker as if it was a microphone and just singing into it.

What is your favourite childhood memory?

I don’t have a specific memory. However, my childhood was filled with adventure. I would find hideouts in the fields and build little places to hangout with my friends. I remember always exploring and finding new things to see around me in my area.

What song do you wish you had written and why?

I can’t say that i’ve ever wished that i had written a song in particular. However, i do admire certain songs such as “Killing me Softly” and i admire the rapping skills of Tupac.

Tell me about the process of making your single Can’t Feel Your Love?

The original track was sent to me by Urban Soul. He reached out to me because, he thought my voice would suit the track. When i listened to the track after some consideration, I thought it had potential so i decided to work on it. I sat in front of my computer and wrote down what i was feeling at the time and made the melodies that would sound great and in sync with the track.

After i was happy with it, i recorded it. So i recorded the idea on my iPhone initially, and then I decided to book time in the studio to record it professionally.

The producer wanted to fly me out to Germany to the record the track at first, but i thought it would be easier to record it in the UK instead. So after i’d hit the studio and recorded the vocals; the rest was history.

What is your best quality as a singer/writer and what's’ the worst?

My best quality is my voice because it’s very versatile and I can adapt my voice to suit various genres/songs. My worst quality is sometimes i will write half a song and then lose interest in it. I also have to write early in the morning for the best results. I don’t know why lol...

Who would you most like to work with and why?

I would like to work with P Diddy. I think he has such a major influence on the music industry. He knows how to make hits and he’s very versatile.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happenend to you?

Well i was at the Carnival one year and i was climbing over a fence to get to the other side of the street. When i buckled and then went rolling into the parade. So many people saw me and started laughing at me. Mortified

Who is your favourite artist/band and why?

I think it would have to be Beyoncé as she is an amazing strong woman, as well as an amazing performer and vocalist.

What song is constantly on your playlist?

I like Sean Paul, Mariah Carey, old Skool Garage and a bit of Tupac.

If you could go forwards or backwards any time you like, where would you go and why?

I would go back to the time I moved out of my mum’s house. And i would never move out.
