Coldplay have been confirmed to headline this year's BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend.

The group will play the event at Glasgow Green on May 24.

Announcing the news this morning (April 23) on Radio 1, singer Chris Martin said:

"We're very thrilled to be asked, thank you so much…We’re all pleased to be here, I speak for everyone when I say that."

Drummer Will Champion added: "We are absolutely thrilled to have been asked to play Radio 1's Big Weekend in Glasgow this year. Playing in Glasgow is always so much fun and Radio 1 have always been wonderful to us so it couldn't really be any better!"

The band also played some tunes for Radio 1's Live Lounge, including the new track 'Oceans'.

The likes of Pharrell Williams, Rita Ora and Paolo Nutini are also scheduled to perform at the two-day Big Weekend event, which saw its 50,000 tickets snapped up earlier this month.

Coldplay meanwhile are due to release their latest album 'Ghost Stories' on May 19.

They will promote the record with six shows around the world over the summer, including a date at London's Royal Albert Hall on July 1.
