Coldplay's 'Ghost Stories' debuts at No. 1 as UK’s fastest-selling album of 2014

Coldplay have shot straight to No. 1 with their sixth album ‘Ghost Stories’.

‘Ghost Stories’ gives Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion and Guy Berryman their sixth consecutive No. 1 album in the UK charts.

Coldplay’s previous five studio albums – ‘Parachutes’ (2000), ‘A Rush Of Blood To The Head’ (2002), ‘X&Y’ (2006), ‘Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends’ (2008) and ‘Mylo Xyloto’ (2011) – have all also topped the UK chart.

Having sold 168,000 copies in the past week alone, ‘Ghost Stories’ is the fastest-selling album of the year so far after beating Paolo Nutini’s first week sales of ‘Caustic Love’ by around 60,000 units.

Last week’s No. 1 album from Michael Jackson with the posthumous ‘Xscape’ has now slipped to No. 2.

The rest of this week’s top five consists of a new entry from The Beautiful South with ‘What Have We Become’, Paloma Faith’s ‘A Perfect Contradiction’ down one to No. 4 and the 20th anniversary re-issue of Oasis’ ‘Definitely Maybe’ new in at No. 5.

New entries to the rest of the album chart include REM’s ‘Unplugged 1991 & 2001 – The Complete Sessions’ at No. 22, the self-titled ‘California Breed’ at No. 26, Bob Blakely from ‘The Voice’ at No. 34 with ‘Performance’, and Cherry Ghost with ‘Herd Runners’ at No. 36.
