Coldplay deny plagiarism

Coldplay have responded to allegations that their latest single ‘Every Teardrop is a Waterfall’ is a rip-off of a ‘90s dance track.

The song hit airwaves for the first time yesterday (June 3) and was quickly met with speculation over its resemblance to dance track ‘Ritmo De La Noche’, which has been recorded by Mystic, the Sacados and Chocolate.

Frontman Chris Martin has since confirmed that the band worked with Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson on the track, whose song ‘I Go to Rio’ is sampled in ‘Ritmo De La Noche’. The pair receive a writing credit on ‘Every Teardrop’.

Martin said on the band’s website: "'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' contains elements of 'I Go To Rio' written by Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson."

A spokesperson for the band also said: "Chris was inspired to write the song after watching the film ‘Biutiful’ by Alejandro Gonzalez.

"In the film, there is a nightclub scene - during which a track is playing in the background, based on 'I Go To Rio' by Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson. As a result, Allen and Anderson are also credited as writers on 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall'."
