David Bowie has died after a prolonged battle with cancer

David Bowie has passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer.

The shock news was revealed today (January 11), with the 69-year-old dying on Sunday (January 10).

A statement posted on his official channels confirmed that Bowie had cancer for a year and a half.

It read: "David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer.

"While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief."

The news comes just days after Bowie released his 25th album 'Blackstar'.

The musician released his first record, which was self-titled, in 1967.

However, it was with the likes of 1969's 'Space Oddity' and 1971's 'Hunky Dory' that mainstream success started to spark.

His first No.1 album in the UK was 1973's 'Aladdin Sane'.

Bowie had heart surgery in 2004 after a performance at a festival in the German town of Scheessel and hadn't toured since.

His last live performance came at a charity show in New York in 2006.

The musician is survived by his wife Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid, who he married in 1992, and his children Duncan Jones (44) and Alexandria "Lexi" Zahra Jones, who was born in 2000.
