A judge has ordered that Dr. Dre & Jimmy Iovine pay $25m (£19m) over Beats Headphone royalties on their Studio headphone line.

The L.A. judge ordered the duo paid Steven Lamar royalties as he had fulfilled his contract and needed payment for the sale of three Beats headphone models, the Studio 2 Wireless, Studio 3, and Studio 2 Remastered which Lamar had designed for the brand.

Dre and Iovine claimed Lamar was only entitled for royalties for Beats Studio, the first headphone model the company launched.

Lamar had originally been seeking $100m (£76m).

Lamar will continue to receive royalties on Beats Studio line sales. He was awarded over $40 million in total to cover the $25m (£30m) and his legal fees. 

Lamar's lawyer, Brian Melton, said: "For anybody who has a great idea and brings it to a company and then doesn't get the recognition or credit that they're due... what this jury verdict says is, if that happens to you and you're a little person, you can go into court and have a jury of American citizens determine whether you're right or wrong. And if you're right, you get the credit that you're owed.

"The other side played it up, I think they thought playing music throughout the trial, hyping up this celebrity stuff was going to get them out of jail for free. And it didn't work out that way."
