Duran Duran "were part of the demise" of the record industry

Duran Duran frontman Simon LeBon has told The Hollywood Reporter that Duran Duran were part of the demise of the old-fashioned record industry and the band must now "get back into mainstream musical culture."

LeBon said: "We witnessed it (the demise) first-hand, and it was very interesting, but it wasn't a great experience. To go from the days when people used to get grand pianos delivered to their doorstep to a time when label executives are being laid off left, right, and centre is quite extreme."

LeBon commented that both the majors that the band were signed to, Capitol Records and Sony/Epic, were very similar:

"Mainly because you’ve worked with one chief executive at one company, and a couple years later, he’s an executive at another company."

LeBon also blames record companies' old fashioned ways for their current financial situation: "One of the things that keeps the majors down is an old school attitude that likes the big expense accounts and isn’t able to economize or pare down.'

The 80's pin-up now doesn't count record sales as a way of judging success due to the way music is shared online which is why Duran Duran are releasing the title track of their new album, as a free download. LeBon stated he "would rather five million people hear it for free than have one million who pay for it."

Duran Duran's thirteenth album, 'All You Need Is Now' is produced by Mark Ronson.
