Elton John on father never seeing him play live: 'Was it homophobia?'

Sir Elton John has contemplated why his father never saw him play on stage.

The musician wrote in The Times that his dad Stanley Dwight never witnessed him play live before his death.

John suggested in the piece that this may have been because his son was gay.

The Brit said: "My father was sealed off from my talent and I never knew why. Was it homophobia? Was it fear?

"That was a painful loss for me. But it was also a painful loss, I think, for my dad. That’s what prejudice does to people."

John added of his pilot father: "You know, my father never came to hear me play. Not ever.

"He was a tough and unemotional man. Hard. In the RAF. He was dismissive, disappointed and finally absent. I just wanted him to acknowledge what I’d done. But he never did."
