Vladimir Putin offers to meet Elton John after gay rights prank call

Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially offered to meet Sir Elton John over gay rights.

The news comes just days after the British musician was pranked by two Russian TV presenters who pretended to be Putin, offering him a meeting about the issue.

The Kremlin government, however, have now confirmed that the politician is happy to meet with John.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian media that Putin has now called the Brit for real.

He is happy to meet John as soon as schedules allow, with "any issues of interest" open for discussion.

Russia has faced criticism for years over its stance on gay rights.

A bill was introduced in the country in 2013 that made it illegal to give information about homosexuality to people aged under 18.
