Sir Elton John's Malaysia concert draws protests

Iconic musician Sir Elton John is due to perform in Malaysia tomorrow, but the concert is already causing controversy and has been met with demonstrations from an Islamic group.

The 'Crocodile Rock' superstar will play a gig at the Genting Arena of Stars in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow night (November 29), but the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) has called on the government to stop the event on moral grounds.

Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi, a spokesperson for the PAS, told AFP that John's sexuality and the values he promotes are destructive: "This concert must be cancelled. Artists who are involved in gay and lesbian activities must not be allowed to perform in Malaysia as they will promote the wrong values."

"[We] demand that authorities cancel the immoral performance to protect our society from social degradation."
